When it’s said that hard work pays off, it’s people like the Pigeon family that come to mind.
For more than three decades, Jim and Michele Pigeon have been running their farm and growing their business in Benton County, Ark. – 365 days a year. The Pigeons are second generation farmers and started their operation at their current location in 1994.
Today, the pair are contract poultry growers for Tyson Foods, raise cattle, and own and operate a plant nursery. They were recently honored as the Benton County Farm Family of the Year. While the Pigeons have never sought awards or recognition, they say they appreciate the support that comes with such an honor.
“We’re very grateful, and we’re humbled,” Jim Pigeon said. “I never dreamed of it. This has never been a goal of ours – to be awarded anything.”
“We were very surprised,” wife Michele added.
Farming is simply their way of life, and they strive to be good stewards of the land they are entrusted with.
“We share this land with everybody – our kids, grandkids, and future generations,” Jim said. “So, we try to stay current on technology and sustainable practices. We always test our soil and follow all regulations and requirements.”
Along the way, they say they’ve enjoyed the relationship with Tyson Foods for nearly twenty years.
“Everybody has a job to do, but we all have the same end goal,” Jim said.
The award now makes them eligible to receive the Arkansas Farm Family of the Year. While it would be nice to win, Jim says farming itself brings all the fulfillment he needs.
“It’s one of those things that gets in your blood and it’s hard to get out. It’s hard work, but I enjoy the rewards you receive when everything starts growing. It’s pretty rewarding to see everything develop.”
